7 Words. 1 Sentence.

How to Play SEPTENCE

Make the highest-scoring sentence you can using only the words allowed for the puzzle. Everyone receives the same seven required words each day, but there is no single intended solution.

Build your entry

  1. Use every required word. You may choose any form listed for that word.
  2. Use only required words, Glue words, and listed contractions. Add as many Glue words as you need.
  3. Submit only when you are ready. Your Daily 7 and Bonus 10 entries are final.

An entry that misses a required word or uses an unavailable word will not receive a score.

Required words and Glue words

Required words are the heart of the puzzle. Tap or open a required word to see its accepted forms and meanings. Glue words are common helpers, including articles, pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositions, that let you connect the required words into a natural sentence.

Use the Glue words you need, but aim for economy. Unnecessary Glue words and repetition may hurt your score.

Scoring

Clear, original writing does best. Grammar, sentence structure, meaning, economy, and sound all contribute to your score. Normal capitalization and punctuation help make your intended reading clear. Possessives are allowed.

The detailed scoring formula is not published. Your completion card provides a score and a few approachable suggestions for your next entry.

Example

Suppose the required words are quiet, brother, sleep, window, forget, letter, and rain. One valid entry is:

“My quiet brother slept by the window and forgot the letter in the rain.”

The forms slept and forgot satisfy sleep and forget; the remaining words are permitted Glue words.
